PhD student — Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon
September 2024 – present
Applied research on anxiety disorders through the development, testing, and validation of a smart sock with simultaneous electrodermal activity and body-movement sensing. Experimental protocol design, multimodal biosignal acquisition, signal processing, and data analysis, with emphasis on real-world clinical applicability.
Research is conducted at HSM, the largest public hospital in Portugal, together with the University’s psychiatric clinic and more recently, with the CWI’s Distributed & Interactive Systems Group (The Netherlands).
Research Fellow — INESC-MN & Instituto de Telecomunicações
November 2021 – September 2024
R&D in wearable technology, signal processing, and machine learning with academic and industry partners. Developed a wireless device for real-time multimodal biosignal acquisition; sensor characterisation and statistical analysis. Industry collaboration with Meia Mania and Torres Fardas. This work led directly into the PhD.
Founded Sympathia Technologies to take this work toward application; the project has since delivered for clients and additional research collaborations.
R&D Engineer — ScientISST
November 2021 – present
Contributor to the ScientISST and BioSPPy open-source repositories (>1.19k downloads/week). Built Python and MATLAB tooling to automate validation of a data acquisition board — Bluetooth packet loss and throughput, stability, battery life, inductive charging. Ran workshops for students and presented the technology at national and international events.

Sandviper LLC — Managed an international team reviewing hardware and firmware for a smart footwear device. Proposed app features and user-insight strategies for growth. Patent review.
Lola Wireless Inc — Hardware and software development for legacy GPS and radio-dispatch systems. Real-time GPS data modules, new controls, user-activity and audio tracking, network interfaces. PCB design, JTAG, Python, SQL.
EmotiphAI — Optimised a smartwatch for affective computing and built a UI for real-time biosignal collection. 4-layer and flex-PCB design, e-textile connectors, firmware, interface design. Pitched to investors and secured the first B2B sales lead.
Airbliss+ — Hardware and firmware for an ISO-standard test bench used for the validation of a smart mask (PPE wearable) with particulate-matter sensors. Led GUI application development. Python, C++, SolidWorks, LabVIEW.
Instituto de Telecomunicações — 3D casing for a wearable affective-computing device, plus production and assembly documentation for 50 units.
PeekMed — Active-learning framework for medical image segmentation, achieving high performance at reduced labelling effort. Python, TensorFlow, SciPy, scikit-learn.
Confidential engagements — Consultancy on heart-rate and stress-sensing headphones (ergonomics, sensor selection). E-textile armband for EMG-driven interaction; assessed prototype scalability, and established suppliers for manufacturing.
